Past applications of laminate countertops at the Scottsdale Health Center resulted in hidden costs, because they quickly showed wear and required constant repair. The Center wanted a long-lasting material that looked less clinical, yet would not support viral or bacterial growth.
Staron® Solid Surface is available in a myriad of colors, which made it easy for designers to create a relaxing ambience. For example, in the Women’s Center, hospital designers chose Staron® in Pebble Saratoga for the waiting and patient areas, and Sanded Kiwi in the reception area. The color choices resulted in a look that is both attractive and practical.
Also, in a hospital setting, it’s absolutely essential that a countertop material is hygienic, easy to clean and nonporous. In fact, many conventional countertop materials are not approved for clinics or hospitals. Those that are, such as stainless steel, have a cold, uncomfortable, clinical appearance that is unsettling to patients.
Additionally, because Staron® Solid Surface is nonporous, bacteria, molds and other contaminants cannot penetrate the surface. For that reason, Staron® is approved for healthcare settings, including laboratories. Moisture cannot penetrate the surface either, so daily cleanings will not result in staining, spotting or damage to the surface.
In the end, the hospital designers were pleased with Staron’s color selection and price, as well as the customer service they received. “There were no big challenges,” said John Dolan, the construction project manager. “The material was very easy to fabricate and install.”
